Recurrence Pattern & Prognosis after Curative Resection of Gastric Cancer

Abstract
Recurrence of gastric carcinoma not infrequently develops after the curative gastric resection. The prognosis of the recurrent gastric carcinoma is dismal inspite of considerable recent progress in treatment. We reviewed the clinicopathological
characteristics, recurrence pattern and survival rate of 111 recurrence of gastric carcinoma cases operated on the Dept. of Surgery, Yonsei Univ. College of Medicine from January 1987 to December 1992. The significant factors relating to recurred
site
were depth of invasion(p=0.05) and tumor size(p=0.05). Time interval to recurrence was closely related to depth of invasion(p=0.0144), number of involved lymph nodes(p=0.0194) and the TNM stage of primary carcinoma(p=0.028). The mean time of
overall
survival was 28.3 months and it was significantly influenced by the number of involved lymph node (p=0.0193). We concluded that the mode of adjuvant therapy should be individualized according to the status and severity of the primary disease to
improve
survival and quality of life.
